Why College Athletes Must Finish School First free essay sample
Introduction For many college athletes, the lure of playing pro sports is intoxicating. Dreams of fancy cars, luxurious homes, tailor-made suits, voluptuous women, and the mental images of a crowded stadium chanting their name is enough for any collegiate athlete to think about abandoning their education for a chance at stardom. When the dreams are solidified with million dollar contracts, think immediately is replaced by impulse. Left behind in the frenzy is the much needed college education that no one seems to care about any more. An athletes only hope is to complete a college education first for what lifes lessons has to offer later when hard-knocks is the final exam. Many people believe there is no need for an education because of the money that is made by professional athletes. They are indeed right. The average athlete earns an annual salary of $3. 3million. The problems are that many professional athlete are either bankrupt or in jail, mostly because of impulse control disorders that cause millions of dollars to disappear. We will write a custom essay sample on Why College Athletes Must Finish School First or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There is no wonder as to 78% of NFL players going broke within 2 years and 60% of NBA players are broke within 5 years of their retirement. Are they a product of their environment? Want to bet? It starts young. Most athletes who make it to the professional level are from lower to middle socioeconomic status where they have been involved in sports since they were young. According to the American Psychological Association, lower socioeconomic statuses correlates to lower education, poverty, and poor health. The effects are inequities in wealth distribution, resource redistribution, and quality of life. The American Psychological Association also identifies lower to middle socioeconomic statuses who are in college in association with the feeling of not belonging in school, thus dropping out before they graduate; perhaps the reason collegiate athletes impulsively abandon their education not only for the mere millions of dollars, but to fit in a world with peers who share the same socioeconomic statuses where they feel the sense of belonging. The problem is the impulsive behaviors continue and are only strengthen by those around them. The negative effects of lower to middle socioeconomic statuses are learned behaviors with a belief that they ââ¬Å"needâ⬠certain items to fit in as normal Americans. So, when they see it, they buy it, -an impulse. Impulse is the automated response devoid of thought. A part of what makes an athlete great, but when too many actions are gratified through habitual repetition of impulses that control ill-eminent behavior off the playing field, disorder of rational thought gives birth to an impulse control disorder. The most troubling impulse control disorders are gambling, overspending, and hyper sexuality. The impulse control disorders that habituate bad behaviors are no stranger to professional athletes. As young athletes learn to act on impulse, they carry on the impulse behavior as they reach adulthood. By this time, cliches, privileges, and attitudes of superiority become a pattern that discerns a collegiate athlete in making critical decisions. Over time, impulse control disorders are so prevalent that athletes get used to other people making their decisions for them. The responsibility is then shifted, rendering the athlete powerless against his or her own destiny. As disorder norminates behavior through the absence of thought, responsible behavior become devoid as does the logic to abandon their college education for a chance as a professional athlete. Then again, how many of us would throw away the winning numbers to the lottery? The same impulse control disorder behaviors by athletes are similar to those that have won the lottery then lost it all. Meet Evelyn Adams. She won the New Jersey lottery not once but twice with the total winnings at $5. 4 million. ââ¬Å"Winning the lottery isnââ¬â¢t always what itââ¬â¢s cracked up to be, ââ¬Å"says Evelyn Adams, ââ¬Å"everybody wanted my money. Everybody had their hand out. I never learned one simple word in the English language no. â⬠Might sound familiar to some professional athletes that canââ¬â¢t just say no for squandering their money, or the collegiate athlete who cannot say no to the multi-million dollar contract. It is imperative for collegiate athletes to finish their college education because of the impulse control disorders that can be overly exploited by the other people and powers that be. Many people cannot phantom a collegiate athlete passing on the opportunity of a lifetime in the same light they see themselves to be foolish for hrowing away the winning lottery ticket. Friends and family often live vicariously through their beloved collegiate athlete in the fact they never been through college themselves. They end up rooting for their success all the way. That is until their athlete is approached by a pro-sports agent and asked to abandon their college education for a career at the professional leve l of stardom and riches. For family and friends, the benefits of a college education for their beloved athlete become null as they see the athleteââ¬â¢s opportunity for themselves. Yet family and friends are least of worries for the athlete to be concerned more for the powers that be. The money that professional athletes can generate draws other people with bigger intentions with less the caring. The powers that be are the television networks, owners, sponsors, and sports agents who receive millions of dollars with no regard for the well-being of the collegiate athlete or the effects of an unfinished college education. As the powers that be are concerned, the college athletes are their mule and forty acres. Athletes should not fall prey to the roar of the crowd nor the dollar signs promised in million dollar contracts. Completing a college degree teaches maturity and responsibility along with the many positive influences that his/her classmates may be to them. The fact that impulse disorders are exploited for everyone elseââ¬â¢s benefit should raise a red flag that a completed college education is not only a wise back-up plan when their pro-career comes to a screeching halt, but a great tool for student athletes to learn lifeââ¬â¢s many lessons before they become pro.

Success in the mist Professor Ramos Blog
Success in the mist Success in the mist Horrible! I was doing horrible at keeping my feet centered to hit the ball properly in the game and everyone in the crowd knew I needed practice pronto. Coach immediately noticed that I was being a cancer to the team and decided to take the next step and sub me out of the game around the 75th minute of the game. For those of you that donââ¬â¢t know there are 90 minutes in a full soccer game, not including extra time. As soon as I sat down on the bench my father and I made instant eye contact but for different reasons. I was pretty much discouraged to play another minute of soccer knowing that I was putting a negative effect on the team. On the other side my dad had made eye contact with me because he knew it was time to grind and show out for the next game because we were about to be close to a championship game and my father would rather die than see me slip up in a big important game like that. My father is about 6ââ¬â¢2 190 pounds with a great big bald head and a nice gleaming white smile. He is probably the most positive and understanding person I know but besides the fact, it was time for me to hit the field that was next to my house and try to figure out how Iââ¬â¢m going to fix these major flaws that were affecting my craft. We first started off by passing the ball to each other because passing is a huge part of my position, which was midfielder. Midfielders in soccer have a big say on what happens on the field because not only can they pass the ball and they can also score and even run back on the other side of the field and play defense. Soon after we moved on to a new drill which was running thru cones and receiving a pass from my dad then having to return a pass back to him accurately, which at first took a lot of focus but after about 15 minutes of doing the drill it soon became second nature. After the big practice that my father and I had was over, we started heading back home because it was starting to get dark and I wouldnââ¬â¢t want anything like an injury to occur on the field, which happens to a lot of athletes that try to over train. When I finally reached home I had a sense of success in my head and confidence that I would have an amazing game and with another day of important practice but there was a problem, my father was not going to be able to attend practice because he had to go to work. Thatââ¬â¢s when my brother lance stepped up and came to take my dads spot. Lance stands at 6ââ¬â¢4 and weighs about 250 pounds and yes we did get our height from my dads side of the family. My brother had played soccer when he was a kid and believe it or not his big ass was an all star at soccer, all around great scorer and passer. In fact he was so good to the point where the coach would come pick him up from his house before games because the coach knew that if la nce didnââ¬â¢t attend the games they would more than likely lose. So he had some pretty good knowledge of soccer and what I needed to work on to be team booster and not a downer. So we went to the same field that my father and I attend when we had our practice and once we arrived I was thinking it was going to be a full technique practice to really focus on my craft but it turns out I was going to be running like an animal. He had me running for about 20 minutes but when I was in the process of running it felt like I have been running for 2 hours. After all the running was pretty much over with and I was about half way done with breathing like a dog, I looked at lance and he says ââ¬Å" fatigue brings a coward out of an athleteâ⬠, which to me opened up my mind and made total sense because in the game I was trying to do certain things like passing and making sure my passes were accurate but it was so hard because I was so tired It was the next day and it was game day, and I had been watching videos on YouTube to help me mentally get ready for the game and put me in the mood to play the best I can possibly play. I felt a little more confident then I usually felt knowing that I was going to play a championship game for all the marbles. We were up against a really great team that had actually been undefeated just like us but we all felt that we had to fight for the victory because we didnââ¬â¢t do all this training for nothing. We came out for warm ups and my father is the first person I spotted in the stands with his dad cap on cheering for my team and I. I knew it was a very big game because the stands that were not usually filled with people, were filled completely up and even had other soccer teams on the side of the bleachers to watch this game. About 5 minutes later I was getting more and more nervous by the second and I look up and the referee is calling for the captains to come up. Adrian, the scor er on my team and defender Nico start to head towards the referee. At this point Iââ¬â¢m nervous out of my mind and my palms are very sweaty but at the same time I was trying to mentally picture the game from my point and see how I would react if certain things happened from my perspective. So the game starts and we all ascend to our positions and we go back and forth in steals and stops for a majority of the game and at this point in the game I get really exhausted and start slowing down a little bit but something clicks and I remember what my brother tells me about being fatigued and I instantly turn into a key player on the field. Whoop whoop! I juke out the defender that was in front of me that was trying to keep me from making a key pass and I look up and see Adrian our big time scorer on the run and headed straight for the net, so I instantly make the pass to Adrian and boom! He kicks the ball passed the goalkeeper and itââ¬â¢s a goal!!!! At this point in the game there are 5 minutes left in the game and the opposing team is driving Down to get there goal and I see Nico sliding to get the offensive player and I immediately run down and stop the player and we kick the ball away from our goal. Ring!!!!!! The whistle blows and itââ¬â¢s game over. We won the championship and the crowd goes crazy, and through all the celebration and happiness I look into the crowd and see my fathers big huge white smile and I smile back because I knew all this work has really paid off.

Health promotion Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Health promotion - Research Paper Example These strategies are supported by five priority action areas as outlined in the Ottawa Charter for health promotion; build healthy public policy, create supportive environments for health, strengthen community action for health, develop personal skills and re-orient health services. Three of the most common health problems that affect people include cervical cancer, obesity and Hypertension (HTN). Cervical Cancer Considered a prevalent condition among the immigrant Americans, cervical cancer is associated with numerous risk factors; against which campaign are fostered to curb the its effects. Although vaccination against cervical cancer is available, timely testing and screening aid in the prevention and management; ultimately reducing the incidence by 80%. Rampant cases in the US are reported among the Vietnamese and non-Latina women immigrants largely associated with limited access to Pap testing. Drastic measures to curb the disparities include awareness campaigns, encouraging adm inistration of primary care by PCPs, and increase patient-provider communication. Cervix in relation to upper part of vagina and posterior portion of uterus The cervix is the narrow portion of the uterus where it joins with the top of the vagina. Most cancers of the cervix are squamous cell carcinomas which are in the flattened epithelial cells that line the cervix. Symptoms such as pelvic pain, heavy bleeding from the vagina, leaking of urine or faeces from the vagina, back pain, leg pain, single swollen leg, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and bone fractures indicate advanced cervical cancer (Green & Kreuter, 1991). Certain risk factors according to the American cancer society include: Chlamydia infection, multiple pregnancies, exposure to the hormonal drug diethylstilbestrol stress and stress related disorders, HPV infection, smoking, HIV infection, diatary factors, hormonal contraception, and family history of cervical cancer. Other risk factors especially for young pers ons are: early age at first intercourse and first pregnancy, compounded by early use of oral contraceptives. There has not been any definitive evidence to support the claim that circumcision of the male partner reduces the risk of cervical cancer, although some researchers say there is compelling epidemiological evidence that men who have been circumcised are less likely to be infected with HPV. However, in men with low-risk sexual behaviour and monogamous female partners, circumcision makes no difference to the risk of cervical cancer (Green & Kreuter, 1991). According to Pham, et al (2003), biopsy procedures is an effective screening test, confirmation of the diagnosis of cervical cancer which is done through colposcopy aided by dilute acetic acid like vinegar solution to highlight abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix. Precancerous lesions are exposed to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia the potential precursor to cervical cancer which is often diagnosed by a pathologist. For premalignant dysplastic changes the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grading is used. The subtypes of cancer include; squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumour, glassy cell carcinoma, villoglandular adenocarcinoma. Non-carcinoma malignancies which can rarely occur in the cervix include; melanoma and lymphoma. According to Mock, et al (2007), prevention of cervical cancer

Consumer Behaviour-Travel and Tourism Essay Example for Free
Consumer Behaviour-Travel and Tourism Essay I want to do this! Whats This? .. . suitcases image by Alexander Ivanov from Fotolia. com Many factors influence travel and tourism consumer behavior. As of 2010, the global travel industry contributed 9. 2 percent of the worlds total gross domestic product, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. People travel for work, to visit family and friends and for pleasure. When it comes to making choices about where and how to travel, multiple factors influence travel and tourism consumer behavior. Global Economy. Travel is often seen as a luxury, and when people are earning less or worried about earning less, they may eliminate travel from their budgets. As the world economy struggled in 2009 and into 2010, the travel industry suffered along with other businesses. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, global travel and tourism was down nearly 5 percent in 2009, specifically due to a struggling economy. Still, as the economy bounces back, the tourism industry will as well. The World Travel and Tourism Council predicts a 3. 2 percent growth in the travel and tourism industry in 2011. Internet and Social Media Consumers have instant access to reviews and opinions about travel spots and accommodations around the world, as well as airlines, car rental agencies and other related travel companies. More and more, people turn to the Internet to research potential trips and seek out bargains. Thus, the Internet and social media can influence consumers travel choices. According to The Digital Letter, reviews on sites like TripAdvisor can make or break a destination. Prospective travelers can read reviews and find out if others found the hotel to be clean and the staff courteous, or if the service [they will] receive is worthy of [their] time and money. The Digital Letter points out that travelers can learn everything they want to know about a destination in a matter of minutes on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. While a businesss website can also play a factor in consumer choice, if independent online reviews arent consistent with the companys claims, travelers are likely to make a different selection. Personal Budgets Even with a bad economy, some people still need or want to travel. In 2010, savvy travelers have many ways to find deals online and cut their costs before heading out the door. Airlines offer online specials for discount flights and last-minute trips, and companies such as Kayak exist solely to gather the best travel deals on the Internet into one place, so shoppers can compare prices. Travelers no longer need to rely on the standard price for transportation or accommodations. They may now make their travel choices based solely on price. .

NASAs Contribution to Technological Advances on Earth Essay -- Exposi
NASA's Contribution to Technological Advances on Earth Abstract à à à à à NASA is more than just a space administration; it shows itself everyday in the world although at first it might not be apparent. There are not many people that know the variety of what it has brought to everyday life. NASA is not limited to just aerospace technology. The three main fields of development have been medical, environmental and consumer products. Each field is equally important to technological development. NASAââ¬â¢s space exploration is essential for the advancement of technology on Earth. History à à à à à On October 1, 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created. It was the day of beginning a rich history of unique scientific and technological achievements in human space flight, aeronautics, space science, and space applications. It was formed because of the Sputnik crisis of confidence. NASA inherited the earlier National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and other government organizations, and immediately began working on options for human space flight (Roland, 1999). à à à à à NASA was first called upon to find out if humans could survive in space in Project Mercury. This was then followed by Project Gemini, which built upon the successes of Project Mercury and used a spacecraft built for two astronauts. NASA then turned their attention to the moon in Project Apollo, which was successful in 1969 when the Apollo 11 mission first put a man on the moon. The Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz Test Projects soon followed in the early and mid-1970s.
